Belly Dance is unlike any other dance or fitness class, and it’s not about having a flab-free stomach.  It’s about feeling comfortable in your own body, exploring your creativity, and expressing yourself through this ancient art.  You do not have to have any previous dance or exercise experience to do belly dance. And you don’t have to fit a profile–Belly Dancing is great for all ages, weights, heights, and conditions.  You are encouraged to work at your own level and progress at your own speed. Please ask if you would like individual attention and don’t hesitate to ask questions or share your concerns. We will start with a gentle warm up before moving on to correct posture and belly dance basics.  Class is concluded with a relaxing cool down and stretching. Pain is not a part of belly dance! Please notify the teacher if you have any injuries or pain (knee problems, back injuries, etc.) so that modifications can be made to work with your specific needs.

In-Class “Rules”
~ Please be on time and ready to dance.
~ Please no food, candy or gum while dancing–-the Heimlich Maneuver is not a belly dance movement. 😉 Feel free to bring a water bottle and small towel with you to class.
~ While you are encouraged to work together and support each other, please direct all criticism to the teacher.  It is tempting to want to help a fellow dancer with a move or technique, but please allow teachers to assist new or struggling students.
~ The last rule is to have fun! Belly Dancing and exercising should be fun!

What To Wear
No, you do not have to show your belly.  If you are comfortable doing so, feel free, but it is not a requirement.  Please wear something comfortable that allows you to move, bend, and stretch.  Tank tops, yoga pants, and workout clothes are most commonly worn. Your teacher will be looking at your posture and the way you move, so please don’t wear excessively baggy or restrictive clothing.  Please remove your shoes to help protect our dance floor. Going barefoot, wearing socks, or soft dance shoes (ballet shoes, Grecian sandals, bear-claws, etc.) will allow you to flow through the moves.  Medical shoes or light-soled athletic shoes are okay.

Class Structure
We will start with a gentle warm up before moving on to correct posture and belly dance basics.  Class is concluded with a relaxing cool down and stretching. Pain is not a part of belly dance! Please notify the teacher if you have any injuries or pain (knee problems, back injuries, etc.) so that modifications can be made to work with your specific needs.  Your teacher will try to work with everyone to keep the class at a challenging, but fun level. If you have questions about technique or feel that you are ready for more advanced movement, please let the teacher know. As you progress in belly dance, you will gain flexibility, strength, endurance, and increased movement. Belly dance is unlike any other exercise class, but works well with other exercise programs such as yoga, aerobics, martial arts, weight training, etc.

Students under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Students under 18 must have parent/guardian approval.  There are no childcare services available at the studio. Children must stay in the seating area or in the back area during classes.  For the safety of our little ones, no children on the dance floor during classes.
