Restorative Belly Dance

Restorative Belly Dance specifically focuses on the restorative properties of community, breath work, somatic body work, and dance. 

Each activity listed above is used to help restore different aspects of the Self within a space that strongly focuses on community connection.

BollyX® Fitness is a Bollywood-inspired cardio dance fitness program that encompasses dynamic choreography with the hottest music from around the world. It’s a fun, high energy class that combines a love of dance with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) principles. BollyX® encourages each participant to “unleash their inner rockstar” just like the actors do in Bollywood movies. Come join Leyla for BollyX Ftiness!

BollyX Fitness

Belly Burn & Bootcamp

Belly Burn / ‘Boda’s Bootcamp is a fitness class designed to get your heart pumping and challenge your mind with multi-level belly dance drills and combos.  Belly Burn is designed to keep you moving while training your mind with new techniques and combinations.  After warming up your mind and body with Belly Burn, you step into ‘Boda’s Bootcamp to increase your strength, flexibility, and endurance.  Take-it-to-your-own-level intensity and find muscles you didn’t know you had, all while having fun.

Prerequisites: None. Some Belly dance is recommended.

Yoga is an ancient practice that aims to create union between body, mind and spirit. Yoga Flow is designed to help students understand basic key principles in yoga, such as alignment, breath to movement, working with your body and your unique needs, as well as keeping your joints safe, flow through several Asana poses designed to improve balance, flexibility, and strength.  Hatha Yoga (meaning force) uses physical techniques to try to preserve and channel vital force or energy. Using the breath during Hatha is key to channeling vital energy resources and finding balance.

BEGINNING

Beginning Egyptian

The Beginning/Intermediate level class focuses on an Egyptian foundation, teaching you the basics movements and posture of traditional belly dance.  No dance experience is needed to participate. Continue with the class to try more intermediate moves as you feel comfortable.  This class is recommended for those who have little or no dance experience and/or minimal aerobic activity.

Beginning/Intermediate Urban Tribal/Tribal Fusion is a fusion belly dance style incorporating traditional belly dance movements and poses with non-traditional  music and more angular and earthy, muscular dancing, as well as fusing together with other dance styles such as alternative, hip-hop, lyrical, and modern dance.  You will learn the basics of belly dance posture and movement and increase your knowledge with more intermediate moves as you feel ready.  This class is recommended for those with little or no dance experience.

Beginning Urban Fusion

EDEN

EDEN [EE-den] is a beginning/intermediate class designed to introduce you to Egyptian style belly dance! This is a low-impact class will teach you to the basic movements and posture of traditional belly dance.  The teacher will work with each student to challenge at the appropriate level.  This group focuses on Traditional Egyptian with some fusion. There are several opportunities to perform throughout the year.   (Performance is optional.)

There are unlimited positions open for those who wish to perform or just take it as a class.

Fat Chance Belly Dance Group Improv, or FCBD® (formerly known as ATS) is a modern, group improvisational style of belly dance created by Carolena Nericcio.
FCBD® is a fusion dance form.  The movements are inspired by folkloric dances of the Middle East, North Africa, Spain, and India.  It is a uniquely modern creation that does not represent an “authentic” dance from any particular region.  FCBD® is a method of improvisational choreography, using a vocabulary of natural movements and cues allowing the dancers to communicate via gesture and eye contact when dancing together.

INTERMEDIATE

AMANI

AMANI [ah-MAW-nee] is an intermediate level Egyptian Fusion performing group. This group performs Traditional Egyptian and Fusion Styles with a little twist in techno, dub-step and lyrical.
“Amani” means flirtatious; wishes, desires, or aspirations; peace, harmony.’

Prerequisites*: One Beginnint/Intermediate class is required. Veil and Zills are recommended.

AZRA ADARA [OHZ-ruh ah-DAH-rah] is an intermediate level performing group performing in the Tribal Fusion dance style. This is a great group for those who have taken a beginning/intermediate class and want to continue in the Tribal Fusion and Urban Tribal dance styles.
“Azra Adara” means ‘resurrection of fire.’

Prerequisites*: At least one belly dance Class is required. Floorwork, Veil, and Sword are recommended.

AZRA ADARA

SAMRUNA

SAMRUNA [sham-ROO-nuh] meaning ‘fusion; integration; unification’ is Desert Journey’s World Dance Fusion class.  This class has a very diverse study of world dances as well as a variety of props.  Each quarter will be a new topic. This class is performance optional.
“Samruna” means ‘fusion’

Prerequisites*: Completed Beginning/Intermediate level belly dance class. An Advanced level class is recommended.

There are unlimited positions open for those who wish to perform or just take it as a class.

VENTUS [VEHN-tuhs] is an intermediate/advanced level Fusion performing group, featuring Traditional Egyptian and Cabaret fused with alternative and modern dance styles.  They also love their props!

“Ventus” is a ‘wild wind’ (subtle or strong, steady or chaotic)

Prerequisites*: Beginning and Intermediate level belly dance classes are required. An Advanced level class is recommended. Veils, Sword, and Voi are recommended.

XANTHERA

XANTHERA [Zan-THEHR-uh] is an intermediate level Dark Tribal Fusion group often referred to as “Gothic belly dance” with an urban twist.  This group enjoys adding lyrical fusion, modern and contemporary dance styles into their dramatic performances.
“Xanthera” means ‘protectors of the earth’

Prerequisites*: Beginning through Advanced Urban Tribal classes, Sword and Floorwork 1 classes are required.  A Veil class is recommended.

ADVANCED / PROFESSIONAL

Desert Journey Dance Company is a professional level performing group consisting of the teachers at Desert Journey School of Dance.  This collaborative group performs in all the various dance styles and uses a wide variety of props when dancing.

Prerequisites: Desert Journey teacher

Performing positions are open to teachers of Desert Journey.

DRAGOMI

DRAGOMI [drah-GAW-me] is a professional Urban Tribal Fusion collaborative group in the “Dragon” style developed by Fvorboda.  Along with modern, non-traditional tribal and fusion movement and creative, unique costuming, Dragomi chooses darker, more energy-fused alternative, industrial, and dubstep music to complete their unique presentation.
“Dragomi” refers to Dragon dance, and also means ‘Beloved (Croatian), Pleasure/My pleasure (Croatian), Dragons’ “Dragomi je” means “how do you do”

Prerequisites: Beginning through Advanced Urban/Tribal Fusion classes. Floorwork levels 1 and 2, Veil, Sword, Fan veils. Traditional belly dance classes and Voi prop is recommended. One year performing with Nepenthe is encouraged.

LUMINESCENCE [loo-mihn-ESS-ents] is an advanced/professional LED group specializing in LED props and illuminating performances.

Prerequisites: Advanced belly dance technique. Proficient in at least two props (excluding zills) is required. Veil, Fan Veil, Voi and Sword are recommended. One year performing in an Advanced level group is encouraged.

Luminescence is an invitation-only performing group. (Contact a member of Luminescence if interested.)

LUMINESCENCE

NEPENTHE

NEPENTHE [neh-PEN-thay] is an advanced Urban Fusion performing group
fusing together Tribal Fusion with an alternative twist.  Sister to Dragomi, Nepenthe selects deeper tones and more fusion music to accompany their Urban Tribal and Tribal Fusion style performances.
“Nepenthe” is a ‘drug that takes away sorrow or grief’.

Prerequisites*: Beginning-Advanced Urban Tribal,  Floorwork 1 & 2, Sword, and Veil are required. At least one year in Adra Adara or Xanthera is recommended.

ZORAYA is an intermediate/advanced level performing group celebrating American and Egyptian Cabaret.  With a hint of Jazz and Modern dance movements, this group shines with their beautiful Cabaret costumes and traditional music.

Prerequisites*: Beginning through Advanced level belly dance classes are required.  A Veil class is recommended.
